Abstract

More than one quarter of the world’s population is under age 15. Children have a special place reserved in all societies worldwide. Clean environments are essential to ensure they will have a future where they may grow, learn and flourish to their full potential. Children’s environmental health studies how environmental exposure during a child’s first years of life affects their health and development then and for the rest of their life. This paper analyzes why the environment is important for the health of children and briefly describes the children’s environmental health discipline and how it is applied. It also lists some measures the health sector could take to protect children from environmental hazards.
