Abstract
The Royal Decree 865/2003 that establishes the hygienic and sanitary conditions to prevent and control legionellosis, requires that all risk installations shall have a suitable water treatment to prevent Legionella growth.
Treatments that are normally carried out for disinfection are usually based on a biocide addition or on a temperature increase.
These treatments in many cases may be very aggressive for the circuit components and result in important corrosion processes that, on the other hand, avoid the disinfection effectiveness.
For all this, it is very important to know the characteristics of each treatment and their possible interactions with the existing materials in order to select the most appropriate not only to guarantee Legionella prevention but, in addition, to maintain the circuit under perfect sanitary conditions.
