Abstract

In 2011 a submarine volcano erupted in the Sea of Calm, southwest from the island of El Hierro, emitting large quantities of matter into the sea that could affect the safety of water produced for human consumption (WHC) and the water quality in bathing areas (BAs). This paper presents the results of monitoring certain parameters in WHC and in BAs near the focus of eruption and its evolution up to the present day.

The most significant changes in the levels of residual free chlorine and pH were detected in drinking water only, although they are not related to the eruptive process but to deficiencies in the infrastructure such that it might not ensure proper disinfection of drinking water.

As conclusions the study allowed us to say that the volcanic eruption did not affect the quality of water in bathing areas or the water for human consumption, and allowed us to assess the changes that occurred so as to optimize the treatment of drinking water in that area up to the present day.
