1. FOCUS AND SCOPE

Research articles, review articles and case studies, as well as analysis of health and environmental actions (environmental health, food hygiene, occupational health, public health laboratories and toxicology).

2. PEER REVIEW PROCESS

Once receipt by e-mail of the original manuscript has been acknowledged (with an assigned URL reference number), this manuscript will be assigned to two referees, who are experts in the field of the original work, and begins the double blind peer review process.

Review method

The reviewers are external to the journal and independent, selected by the Editorial committee to judge the manuscript’s appropriateness for publication and, where necessary, will suggest any necessary corrections or modifications.

Review criteria

Each submitted manuscript is evaluated for:

  • the originality of its contribution in the research field of the journal
  • the thoroughness of its theory and methodology
  • the coherence of its analysis
  • the ability to communicate to the readers (grammar, style)

Review timetable

The average time before the authors are notified of the result of the first review of their work is between four weeks from the date of receipt of the original manuscript.

Monitoring the review process

The authors can monitor the review process of their article through their account on the website of the journal.

Result of the review

The result of the review process could be:

  • Acceptance of the article
  • Acceptance subject to some corrections and modifications by the authors
  • Rejection awaiting the corrections and modifications by the authors, prior to a new review process
  • Rejection

Any of these reports will be sent to the authors by e-mail. Conventional postal service will only be used when the authors require a hard copy of the acceptance letter.

Publication and reprints of the article

If the article is published, the authors can obtain an electronic reprint on the website of the journal, in pdf format (that maintains the format and page numbering of the published hard-copy version).

5. CONFLICT OF INTEREST STATEMENT

The Spanish Journal of Environmental Health requires all authors and reviewers to declare any conflicts of interest that may be inherent in their submissions.

Conflict of interest for a given manuscript exists when a participant in the peer review and publication process – author, reviewer, or editor – has ties to activities that could inappropriately influence his or her judgment, whether or not judgment is in fact affected.

Financial relationships with industry, for example, through employment, consultancies, stock ownership, honoraria, expert testimony, either directly or through immediate family, are usually considered to be the most important conflicts of interest. However, conflicts can occur for other reasons, such as personal relationships, academic competition, and intellectual passion.

Public trust in the peer review process and the credibility of published articles depend in part on how well conflict of interest is handled during writing, peer review, and editorial decision making. Bias can often be identified and eliminated by careful attention to the scientific methods and conclusions of the work. Financial relationships and their effects are less easily detected than other conflicts of interest. Participants in peer review and publication should disclose their conflicting interests, and the information should be made available so that others can judge their effects for themselves.

Authors: When they submit a manuscript, whether an article or a letter, authors are responsible for recognizing and disclosing financial and other conflicts of interest that might bias their work. They should acknowledge in the manuscript all financial support for the work and other financial or personal connections to the work.

<p<Reviewers: External peer reviewers should disclose to editors any conflicts of interest that could bias their opinions of the manuscript, and they should disqualify themselves from reviewing specific manuscripts if they believe it appropriate. The editors must be made aware of reviewers’ conflicts of interest to interpret the reviews and judge for themselves whether the reviewer should be disqualified. Reviewers should not use knowledge of the work, before its publication, to further their own interests.

6. PUBLICATION ETHICS AND MALPRACTRICE STATEMENT

The Spanish Journal of Environmental Health and its editors are committed to fair and professional dealing in all aspects of our publishing operations. Our role is to publish original work of value to the intellectual community in the best possible form and to the highest possible standards. Honesty, originality and fair dealing on the part of authors, and fairness, objectivity and confidentiality on the part of editors and reviewers are among the critical values that enable us to achieve our aim.

The Spanish Journal of Environmental Health endorses and behaves in accordance with the codes of conduct and international standards established by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and available free of charge on its website (http://publicationethics.org/).
